Padel has gone through a remarkable transformation in recent decades. Not just in popularity or professionalization, but in something just as crucial: the courts themselves. Today, we take a look at how padel courts have evolved—from rough concrete enclosures to sleek panoramic arenas—and how those changes have impacted the way we play.
The Early Days: Concrete Walls, Crazy Corners and Soft Fencing
You may not have seen them in South Africa, but early padel courts were made with thick concrete walls instead of glass. The surface was rough and absorbed most of the ball’s energy—it felt like the wall swallowed the ball. And if the ball hit the corner where the wall met the mesh fencing… good luck! The rebound could go anywhere, and predicting it was nearly impossible.
The metal mesh used to be softer and more flexible too, which meant unpredictable bounces or balls that just died there. Today’s fencing is more rigid, offering more consistent reactions and making play near the edges much more reliable.
Enter the Glass: Visibility, Consistency…
Over time, tempered glass became the standard. Glass walls brought a modern look and, more importantly, significantly improved visibility—for both players and spectators. Bounces off the glass are also cleaner, faster and more predictable, requiring players to position themselves earlier and react quicker.
That said, glass courts come with a trade-off: they trap more heat. On a hot and sunny day, the inside of a fully glass court can feel like a sauna.
Turf Evolution: Grip, Slide, and Fewer Injuries
Floor surfaces have also come a long way. We’ve moved from carpet or bare cement to artificial turf, now the industry standard. The type of silica sand used can affect how fast or slow the court plays, how players slide, and even how likely they are to get injured. The result is a faster, safer, and more enjoyable game.
Panoramic Courts and Tech for the Show
In pro tournaments, you’ll now mostly see panoramic courts—no visible metal structures on the back or sides, giving a cleaner look and better viewing angles. Add in LED lighting, retractable roofs, and performance sensors, and it’s clear how far we’ve come since those unpredictable old-school concrete courts.
What’s Next?
Even with all this progress, there’s still plenty of room for innovation. We’re already hearing about smart courts that can analyze players’ movement, ball bounce, or turf wear in real time. New materials might soon offer better thermal insulation for outdoor courts or even reduce joint stress for players.
And who knows? One day you might be able to customize your court via an app—change the turf color, adjust the game speed depending on the weather, or add visual effects for training. Padel hasn’t reached its ceiling—not in performance, and definitely not in tech.
